Flattening the Curve Is Not Doing What You Think It Is: The Killer Curve

WARNING UNPOPULAR OPINION AHEAD… Proceed at your own caution.

Believe it or not flattening the curve isn't "saving lives" it's actually "killing life as we know it." And I'll prove it to you.

Let it first be known that I believe wholeheartedly in the fact that we should take the appropriate steps to protect those that are demographically susceptible to the Novel Coronavirus. However, more importantly let it be noted that there is nothing more important within America than the individual rights of each and every one of our citizens. This means that fighting COVID-19 is not the responsibility of governor mandates and mass shelter-in-place orders, but of each individual’s choice. My headstrong belief is that policy towards the terminally susceptible should be implemented with consensus while the healthy and independent may continue to live life as they see fit.

State governments have crossed a line to such an extent that they are operating on multiple levels of unconstitutionality. We must understand that the government’s sole responsibility is only coordinate policy… not to tyrannically enforce unpopular pandemic measures against the people’s will. For example, state owned nursing homes should be shuttering their doors to any visitors. Another example of my belief of protection is that if an individual is immunocompromised they then have opportunity and right to remain sheltered in place as a matter of personal preference. Lastly, but not least, those who are healthy and willing to work should be 100% absolutely, unquestionably, allowed to go into work and support the lives of their choice. Ultimately, there is no reasonable justification for trespassing upon a person’s rights, they can either choose to consider if the risk is worth the reward… why would you need a tyrant to choose for you or anybody else? Seriously. Why. Why would you?

Despite the less than stellar legalities, state governments have been pushing the “Flatten the Curve” concept, yet they have 100% failed to accurately describe the sequential outcomes of their lawlessness. To put it shortly, state’s citizens are buying the crap their governors are selling. If there is one takeaway from today’s material, it should be that flattening the curve does not save lives. The only thing that flattening the curve does is ensure that the spread of the virus is slowed down. Without a vaccine or cure you will only prolong the societal impact and the amount of time in which it takes for the same amount of people to become infected. This 100% percent means the same amount of people will be infected and die of COVID-19 whether the curve is flattened or not given an infinite amount of time with a flattened curve. Please understand that when the governor communicates at their daily briefing that he is saving lives by social distancing and limiting society, he or she is not caring about you or saving lives. The governor is actually misconstruing the fundamental purpose of a risk mitigation strategy that has a significantly profound impact upon the rest of society while it remains in place. For example, it’d be a lot like going on a cruise and hearing that the captain of a ship sees no need to fill up their boat once they’re stranded out at sea and out of gas. Yes, your journey is longer, but what are going to do when you are two months past getting back to your normal life taking care of your house, going to work, enjoying your kid’s Little League baseball game, and connecting with friends. Thanks to your captain you just missed out on the rest of your life.

Before you go thinking that I’m trivializing flattening the curve, you should know that I actually believe in it and that I think that it's pure genius. Like anything else though, it has a place and a time, but it only should be implemented if it’s widely accepted and understood by those that it will be impacting. I’m actually contending that state’s implement the most optimal solution rather than a stopgap, Jerry-rigged solutions that includes an unacceptably unconstitutional policy. The goal of flattening the curve should not be to prolong and cross your fingers for a cure within so many months. The goal should be to flatten the curve as close to healthcare system capacity as possible while remaining constitutional and limiting the collateral impact upon individuals lives. This means that people are free to live life as they choose in addition to also limiting the adverse impact upon businesses and the subsequent economy. We must consider the long term risk reward of crippling or even killing our economy and society by excessively flattening the curve way below the healthcare system capacity… as you might now come to believe it would not be worth it. With that said, never forget that it is best to address the variables as they come rather than as you anticipate. In summary, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

My challenge to you is to change my mind as it’s now your turn to comment or post your own blog about flattening the curve. Or feel free to start your own free blog about your own topics with our community of intellects!
